Approach
Challenge
Rail is the mode of transport for passengers and goods that has the lowest overall environmental impact. We are the best mobility alternative in the fight against climate change. Renfe is the largest consumer of renewable electricity in Spain, as 80% of our train traffic is powered by renewable energy. We contribute to preventing the increase in the global average temperature.
But all of this is not enough, we want to go further in sustainability.
In order to consolidate and strengthen Renfe’s role as a sustainability provider, we are looking for technological solutions that will allow us to boost the strategic lines that Renfe is working on: energy management, energy efficiency, decarbonization, and awareness raising culture for different stakeholders.

Below are examples of potential solutions for this challenge; however, candidates may propose any solution not included as long as it aligns with the challenge:
- Solutions that allow us to involve and raise awareness among customers about reducing their carbon footprint, not only during the train journey, but also throughout their entire trip.
- Carbon footprint reduction solutions in the last mile transportation mode.
- Carbon footprint reduction solutions in the last mile transportation mode.
- Development of technologies for intermodality that will allow us to promote rail as the most sustainable option for freight transport.
- Development of energy management systems that allow for the optimization of energy use and generation in the railway system.
